5 Feb 2020

National Assembly for Wales

In 2020 the Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee (National Assembly for Wales) is looking into whether broadcasting should be devolved to Wales. It has invited Caitriona and Ruth to participate in a stakeholder meeting in February.

This will be an opportunity for discuss if Wales should have greater powers in relation to broadcasting area and how that might be achieved.

Areas for discussion are:

  • What, if any, aspects of broadcasting should be devolved to Wales, and how would this benefit Wales and Welsh audiences?
  • The BBC, including its governance and funding.
  • S4C, including its governance and funding.
  • Other public service broadcasters (ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5).
  • Regulatory functions currently carried out by Ofcom.
  • How any changes proposed align with the shift to digital media consumption.
  • How any changes proposed would impact on the media production sector.

Both Ruth and Caitriona look forward to bringing their research findings to bear in this discussion and to shaping the future of cultural policy in Wales.
